If a man makes a vow to the Lord,
or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement,
he shall not break his word;
he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
Numbers 30:2 NKJV
I'm not certain we go around making too many 'vows,' today
as seriously as the people of Moses' time.
But we certainly make our share of...
promises, commitments, and plans.
When I think of a vow,
the first thing that comes to my mind,
is a marriage vow.
A vow is defined as a solemn promise, pledge or personal commitment.
It is an earnest declaration.
No where in the definition does it even require a signed document,
but it certainly sounds more serious than a promise.
But no matter if a paper is signed, or a judge is present,
it would seem that God takes these commitments of the heart
And to be honest, even though this seems like an Old Testament rule...
our God is the same God, today as He was yesterday.
So why would He change His mind
about His thoughts on our commitments to a promise... or a vow?
I believe that we are the ones that have changed...
We live in a society that has...
Lessened the language that leads to longevity,
Pared down our promises, and
Curtailed our commitments.
Why are so many of us promising less, yet wanting more?
For me, sometimes, it's simply that I desire to get my own way..
Selfish, I know.
But sometimes I make a commitment out of a good heart.
Then when the time comes to keep it...
It just seems to get in the way of my feelings.
Now I want my time to myself...
Selfish I know.
So do I stop making promises?
Do I want others to stop making and keeping theirs to me?
Of course not.
Even greater to contemplate...
Do I want God to fail at keeping His promises?
You know, like the ones about unfailing love,
forgiving my sin as far as the east is from the west,
and my eternal salvation because Jesus died for me.
What if God just woke up today,
and didn't feel like keeping those?
Vows, promises and commitments aren't meant to be made on feelings.
They are made on relationships.
They are made to be kept, regardless of our feelings.
Maybe I'm simply being too idealistic.
But I believe that God is longing for us, individually...
and as a whole society,
to fully honor our vows, our promises, and our commitments.
And to do so without excuse or reservation... without reliance on our feelings.
If you make a promise, keep it.
If it hurts you so much, just don't make it again...
but keep the first promise you made.
And realize that you are honoring God... in the keeping.
Word of God... train me, today...
to hold fast to any, and all vows I have made,
to think fully before promising, and then trust You through them all.
make me a good promise keeper.
Generous, helpful, kind and giving.
Let others know that I represent You well.
For You are a God who ALWAYS keeps
from my heart...
I write as an overflow... an expression of my true love for God and with a deep desire to encourage others in their day to day lives. For we can only find peace, joy, and satisfaction when we yield to the One who yielded His life for us.
