What an amazing moment this must have been!
Truly, I try to imagine standing at the base of this mountain; the ground shaking, the smoke rising, the trumpeting sound coming from above... growing louder and louder. But from where? Then a thunderous voice speaking to Moses.
But the people were not excited that day.
God intended this meeting so that the people would put their trust in Moses. For He had said to Moses just days before this, “I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear when I speak with you and will always believe you.” Exodus 19:9
I would have thought hearing from God would be an incredible moment. But I've never heard from Him audibly before. So after reading about the crowd's response, I grow in amazement and respect for the courage of Moses.
For this is what happened...
All the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain surrounded by smoke. When the people saw it they trembled and stood at a distance. “You speak to us, and we will listen,” they said to Moses, “but don’t let God speak to us, or we will die.” Exodus 20:18-19
Many of us say we want to hear from God... to know His will for our lives, to have a decision to a prayer, to give us direction or answers. But this gives me cause to believe that few of us could truly handle the awe and reverence; few of us could actually stand on the holy ground, in the range of the trumpet sound and the thunderous voice that shakes the ground if He were to actually speak aloud to us.
So for today, I will be content with the quiet whisper of the Holy Spirit inside, knowing that one day I will bow to His very vocal and thunderous voice as well.
