This to be sure would have been a frightening sight. As Joshua prepares his mind and his men for the battle ahead in Jericho, he is met with a warrior with sword drawn.
Clearly the encouragement he has had thus far from Moses and the Lord has emboldened him to approach... to ask if this warrior is for or against. And this, the introduction of the Lord as our Ready Commander. For God appeared to Abraham and Moses in differing ways. But this, to be sure, shows the warrior side of our Lord. For this is Jesus, Himself standing before Joshua. And He has His sword drawn to show His readiness to fight for righteousness. For this is not a battle of sides, man against man. But one the Lord sees as just and right to show His power for those who will follow Him faithfully. And this same Ready Commander will lead us... will fight for us if we will let Him. Are we on the side of righteousness? Are we set apart from the world's way and seeking the way of the Lord? For just as Joshua instructed his men, so the Lord instructs us... “Consecrate yourselves, because the Lord will do wonders among you tomorrow.” Joshua 3:5 Consecrated... set apart and not like all the others. This to be certain is the way to find our Commander, ready with sword drawn, leading us to victory.
