The one who lives under the protection of the Most High
dwells in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalm 91:1-2 How beautiful are David's words, even as he hides in caves, defending his life from the madness of King Saul. For he does not put his confidence in the cliff of a rock to hide him, nor the weapons at his side to defend him. David knows, from experience, that the Almighty Lord God is his protection. And though he was moving about, constantly on the run from this ruthless enemy, he boasts of his dwelling place. Not because he's describing the physical surroundings... which clearly were not homey, nor comfortable. He has placed his mind, his heart and his trust in the God of the heavens, whose mighty wings are his shelter, And clearly David has seen the miraculous as he boasts of a heavenly host... an army of angels who move swiftly into battle at the command of the Lord. Let us too, when we fear the worst, when our burdens weigh heavy... claim these precious words as our own and believe God is our refuge. For then the Commander of the Angels will send them to our defense as well.
