To make atonement is to appease, to cover over, to cleanse and forgive. Clearly, long ago it was necessary that a priest do this on behalf of the people since he was set apart and appointed to make offerings at the altar of God.
The one who committed sin was to bring an unblemished, a first born lamb before the priest to be slaughtered, because the blood was necessary for the sacrifice, for the offering to cover the sin... an atonement made.
But now we no longer require this constant process... this ritual repeated every time we sin. For God sent His Son as the ultimate sacrifice, the unblemished Lamb... an offering, an atonement. And He too is the Priest who now goes before us...
For this is the kind of high priest we need: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. He doesn’t need to offer sacrifices every day, as high priests do... first for their own sins, then for those of the people. He did this once for all when He offered Himself.
Hebrews 7:26-27 HCSB
How grateful I am that our God has provided through Jesus, this atonement, once for all. How merciful, how loving, how kind.
