I simply love to laugh.
And the only thing I enjoy more
is making someone else laugh,
and then laughing at that!
I have a friend...
she laughs at almost
everything I throw out at her.
She is a joy to be around.
Not just because she laughs
at my jokes,
but because she loves me
immensely and lifts my spirits.
And I simply believe
that had to be what it was like
to hang out with Jesus.
You know, when we read
about Him in the Bible,
it tells of all the wonderful
signs and miracles,
teachings and parables,
and even of the many questions
He posed to those who needed
to contemplate deeper understanding.
But we don't get many glances
between the pages...
at just the guys
hanging out around the campfire
talking about their adventures,
sometimes laughing until their sides hurt.
Maybe it was the retelling of
the way Peter started flapping his arms
to stay up on the water's surface
when he looked at the waves?
One of them might stand up
and act it out with exaggeration
as they all teased in rememberence.
Still, down deep most wished they had
been the one who gave it a try.
Or Jesus might retell of
look on the disciples faces
when they saw the man possessed
of unclean spirits running at them
from out of the tombs.
The way He would describe it
from His perspective,
Man, I wish you could've seen your faces...
always lifted their spirits.
The narrow escapes from
the pressing crowds...
even the places they'd been
not as welcome, but shook
the dust from their feet.
Surely they looked back
and laughed at some of
the experiences they had
and what they were learning
on that crazy journey like no other.
And then to watch Him...
the most compassionate man
who has ever walked this earth
take the hand of a mother
who's child was being carried
to the grave in a funeral procession...
to know that in a moment
every thing would change for her
and they got to witness it.
What a privilege those men had
to personally know the Messiah
and walk with Him every day.
I wonder if it ever got old...
or became just like any ordinary day?
Do you think that's maybe why
Jesus started changing up His miracles?
Maybe why He got a little creative...
Then they brought to Him
one who was deaf and
had an impediment in his speech,
and they begged Him
to put His hand on him.
Because to this point,
that's typically how Jesus healed people...
with the touch of His hand or a word.
And He took him aside from the multitude,
and put His fingers in his ears,
and He spat and touched his tongue.
Then, looking up to heaven,
He sighed, and said to him,
“Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.”
Immediately his ears were opened,
and the impediment of his tongue
was loosed, and he spoke plainly.
Mark 7:32-35 NKJV
Now that's a new and creative way
to heal someone's deaf ears...
put your fingers in them.
Then He spat and touched his tongue...
not quite sure how that went,
but different for certain.
I just have to chuckle at that one
because Jesus, was keeping them
on their toes!
He was not letting anyone
sit back and think...
Yep, another day,
No big deal hangin' out with
the Son of God!
No, Jesus kept it amazing!
Showing them that You can't
just put Him in a box,
and tell Him how you want
your miracle performed.
Jesus is not a genie in a bottle
that we get to rub and get our wish.
He is an imaginative, Creator God
who cannot be defined!
And I sure do love Him for that.
Aren't you glad He has
such a great sense of humor?
I mean, that miracle was kind of
a funny way to heal someone...
And I say that because
He works that way
in my life too, and thankfully
makes me laugh, even at myself.
Which is often a good dose of humble.
Reminding me that He is God,
and I certainly am not.
But it causes me to thank Him
and love Him all the more.
How much richer our lives are
when we serve Him with gladness!
Word of God
train me today...
To always marvel at Your wonders.
To keep my sense of humor about life
and not take myself too seriously.
