And the Lord spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle...
“Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel,
by their families, by their fathers’ houses,
according to the number of names,
every male individually,
from twenty years old and above...
all who are able to go to war in Israel.
You and Aaron shall number them by their armies.
And with you there shall be a man from every tribe,
each one the head of his father’s house.
Numbers 1:2-4 (NKJV)
We are in the second year since the children of Israel were led from Egypt.
They remain in the wilderness, and await the move of God.
He has given them laws to obey, rules to follow and blessings that will come...
if they walk in His ways.
And now God has asked for the people to be numbered...
according to their lineage, those men, twenty years and older, able to go to war.
And while the accounting of these details does not make for entertaining reading,
they will provide the people with benchmarks...
with measurements by which to see God's faithfulness.
For He made a promise to Abraham to multiply his descendants
and this is only the beginning.
And God calls them as He sees them... an army.
For He needs to begin to change their perspective...
the way they see themselves.
So they will be better prepared for the days to come.
For soon they will be on the move.
And there will be harder days ahead, when these men will need to fight,
when these men will need to be prepared for battle.
And we too need to know how God sees us.
We too need to change our perspective,
that we see ourselves no only as God's children,
but as His army...
ready and prepared for the days ahead.
And just as He was for the Israelites...
He is for us...
for I am the LORD your God.
You would think this might be something God wants us to know...
as He has repeated this exact phrase over twenty times
in the book of Leviticus, alone
And similar versions of the same, over forty-five times.
Because He wants us to know Him,
to claim Him,
to realize Him... personally.
Not as someone else's God...
our Mom's God,
our Pastor's God,
our sweet Christian friend's God.
No, God want's us to call on Him as OUR God.
He wants us to know that He is the LORD... our God.
It is a personal relationship He desires with each one of us.
Word of God... train me, today...
to know that the great I AM is my LORD and my God,
to know myself as God sees me... His child, His special treasure, His warrior.
Thank You, Lord
for ever and always reminding me
that You are my God.
You are for me.
You are personal.
You are close.
Even though... You are always mighty
and seated on Your throne.
I long to listen,
to be trained, learning who I am in You.
Keep me ever close
filling me with Your wisdom.
