Maybe you know the story of Joseph and his brothers.
That Joseph was a dreamer... the favorite of his father Jacob.
The same Joseph whose 10 older brothers hated him... and rather than killing him, as they wanted to, they sold him to a traveling caravan of Ishmaelites. Then led their father, Jacob to believe he was killed by a lion.
Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt.
And Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard,
an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites...
The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man;
and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
And his master saw that the Lord was with him
and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand...
the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake...
Kind of ironic... to read that the man sold... betrayed by his very own family was then sold again to become successful, even as a servant in another's home. But then he was falsely accused and imprisoned.
But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy,
and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand
all the prisoners who were in the prison...
and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper.
And while in prison, Joseph interpreted dreams of the Pharaoh's servants. And one day, the Pharaoh was in need himself, of such interpretation... so he called upon Joseph. And Pharaoh was pleased with Joseph.
Then Pharaoh said to Joseph,
“Inasmuch as God has shown you all this,
there is no one as discerning and wise as you.
You shall be over my house,
and all my people shall be ruled according to your word;
only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you.”
And Pharaoh said to Joseph,
“See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.”
For even a Pharaoh who does not worship the same God, gives Him the credit for Joseph's wisdom and discernment. And in the matter of moments, just shortly after meeting this one who was hours ago, filthy and imprisoned, Pharaoh has complete trust in Joseph and is placing him in charge of everything in the entirety of Egypt. That is truly an astounding thing. That is quite unbelievable. Only God could cause such favor upon a person.
And I look back over the trail of difficulties that Joseph endured the last 13 years... for certainly his road has not been easy. It was fraught with betrayal, denial, hatred and lust... all so others could satisfy their own selfish desires at the expense of another. And yet, never do we hear the, "woah is me..." speech from Joseph. Because he moves from one place to the next and finds quickly finds favor. I cannot imagine this happened by walking in the door with an, "I'm innocent... let me go..." whine.
Rather, Joseph must have done his best to keep his tongue, show respect, find his place, and do his best. Because God knew who had wronged him, and God would sort out the details. And Joseph, I believe... learned early on, not to share his dreams too soon. But I don't believe he stopped dreaming them. In fact, I believe that's part of what kept him going.
Word of God... train me, today...
to remember that You can bless me even through the hard times.
Lord God, help me to hold onto my dreams
even when others want to step on them...
even when others cannot envision them...
even when they seem so far fetched.
You planted them deep inside for a reason,
if only to propel me past my pain...
give me strength even when I face difficult times.
Help me to trust You first and allow Your favor to bless me
even when my circumstances look bleak.
I trust You Lord for the outcome...
as I long to glorify You in all things
and bless others along the way.
