faithful to fight for God

David is now King, not just of Judah,
but of all of the tribes.
And there was joy in Israel.

And David continued to conquer the Philistines,
as God delivered them into his hand.

But next on the list to conquer,
was the city of Jerusalem...
a place of prophecy belonging to the Lord.

And the king and his men went to Jerusalem
against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land,
who spoke to David, saying,
“You shall not come in here;
but the blind and the lame will repel you,”
thinking, “David cannot come in here.”

2 Samuel 5:6 NKJV

Certainly an odd thing to yell from inside their walls.
Why were the people of Jerusalem taunting David, saying...
the blind and the lame will repel you?

And how could this be said of the new king...
a man after God's own heart?
Surely he could not despise a people disabled.
Surely he was a man, compassionate to all.

But these Jebusites were not speaking
of the inhabitants of their city.
Rather, they are idol worshippers...
and they knew what David had said of their gods.

Their idols are silver and gold,
The work of men’s hands.
They have mouths, but they do not speak;
Eyes they have, but they do not see;
They have ears, but they do not hear;
Noses they have, but they do not smell;
They have hands, but they do not handle;
Feet they have, but they do not walk;
Nor do they mutter through their throat.
Those who make them are like them;

So is everyone who trusts in them.
Psalm 115:4-8

David was a hater of idolatry...
as would be a man after God's own heart.

These Jebusites were known for their idols,
they worshipped only statues...
blind and lame according to David.

Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion...
that is,
the City of David.

2 Samuel 5:7

David, clearly a man of strong beliefs.
Admirable that even his enemies know where he stands.
And David, not moved by their laughter at his faith,
does not cower, does not waver, does not apologize.
David is certain of what he believes.
David is faithful to fight for his God.

Word of God,
train me, today...

to be faithful in the convictions You lay upon my heart,
to worship You, and You alone, my God who sees and freely moves.
