And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
“Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them:
‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.
Leviticus 18:1-2 (NKJV)
God has asked Moses to gather ALL the people...
and command that they be holy.
Because the Lord their God is holy.
I don't know about you, but if I were standing in that crowd today,
I'd be a bit overwhelmed.
Because I consider myself anything but holy.
Even upon my waking today, I had thoughts and feelings that did not rise up to meet the standard of holiness. They were more like jealousy, resentment, self-pity and discouragement.
So how can I take this charge from God seriously...
how could I ever follow His command to be holy?
And I would guess that many of these children of Israel felt the same. After all, they were people, just like you and me. But what God knew, is that where He was leading them... the land of which He promised to give them, was inhabited by people who were idol worshippers. It was filled with people who did not follow Him or His ways.
And what God wanted the Israelites to do... is set themselves apart before they got to Canaan. He wanted them to have healthy and holy lifestyles in place before they got mixed up, and mixed in with these people. So that they would not be influenced by them.
God was pre-programming their minds to think of themselves as holy...
consecrated, set apart.
God wanted them have a new identity.
Not to be like the Egyptians... where they came from.
nor to be like the Canaanites... where they were going.
‘I am the Lord your God.
According to the doings of the land of Egypt, where you dwelt,
you shall not do;
and according to the doings of the land of Canaan,
where I am bringing you, you shall not do;
nor shall you walk in their ordinances.
You shall observe My judgments and keep My ordinances,
to walk in them:
I am the Lord your God.
You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments,
which if a man does, he shall live by them:
I am the Lord.'
God wanted the children of Israel to know who they serve.
He had them isolated in the wilderness...
between their past and their future.
And while He kept them there, He was certain to tell them of His statutes and His ordinances... which He commanded them to follow. But He also wanted them to know, that He was the Lord, their God.
For in two chapters... 18 and 19, He repeated Himself twenty times, saying...
I am the Lord your God.
Twenty times, God told them that He was their Lord.
As we read, it almost becomes redundant. And there is this... yeah, I get it...
going on inside my head.
But that's exactly what God wants.
He wants us to know, that we know...
that He is our LORD!
And we are His children... set apart,
holy and pleasing to Him.
You have been set apart as holy to
the Lord your God,
and He has chosen you from all the nations of the earth
to be His own special treasure.
Deuteronomy 14:2 (NLT)
Even today, God wants us to be set apart and holy,
unlike the world around us.
Not compromising or blending in...
not gray or shadows
But rather standing tall for God and His righteousness...
full of brightness and light.
Word of God... train me, today...
to KNOW that You are my Lord,
to be set apart and HOLY for a purpose.
help me to always remember that you have chosen me
to represent You to the world.
Let me not blend in or compromise my faith.
Give me boldness to stand up,
to stick out,
to be light to a dark world.
from my heart...
I write as an overflow... an expression of my true love for God and with a deep desire to encourage others in their day to day lives. For we can only find peace, joy, and satisfaction when we yield to the One who yielded His life for us.
