The Lord is on our side.
Just as He was the Israelites.
Even when they were in captivity.
Even when they felt oppressed.
Even when they saw no way out.
Yahweh of Hosts is His name.
The Lord who commands the angel armies.
And He fervently pleads our case.
Which means, He is like our attorney.
Even though the sins we committed
offended His heart, still He pleads our case.
So that He might bring rest to the earth.
God does not desire that we live
in a world of offense and upheaval.
God does not desire that we just survive
day to day in the chaotic scramble
of To-Do lists and errands...
constantly stressed and overwhelmed.
God does not desire that we barely get by
overrun by debt and debt collectors.
God does not desire that we hide from
the shame of our past or the secrets
we hope no one hears or discovers.
Our God desires to BRING REST
not just to us, but to the whole earth.
let the Lord fight our battles.
cry out to the Lord of Hosts
who has an army ready to defend us.
trust that God is on our side.
accept the forgiveness He offers
and live in the peace He provides.
For He is Our Fervent Advocate!
Have you ever taken a test and had no clue of the answer? Or lost your keys, tearing the house upside down looking for them? Of course you have... we all have.
And during those times, have you ever considered that someone knows the answer to that question.... if they could only give you a hint.
Because I've thought that about my keys. Like... God, I believe You KNOW where they are. Could You just give me a hint? Like, say if I'm getting cold or hot?
And that's in fact what Jeremiah is telling us today. That the Lord, who created all things... who formed and established the world, putting everything and everyone in it's place, will in fact answer our questions. But it seems that we are simply not asking them.
Because He has all the answers to all the test questions. And He does in fact know where your keys are. But consider how much more He wants to tell you. What greater wealth of knowledge He wants to share with you.
Let us ask Him.
Let us seek Him.
Let us spend time wondering today.
For He is Our Ever-Ready Answer!
So, you know those Ten Commandments,
the two tablets carved with the Law of God...
Did you know that God wrote those with His own finger? For some reason, movies and TV get it all wrong. They depict Moses as this scribe who's frantically trying to chisel out the words God is speaking to him on these big rocks. But that's NOT exactly how it happened.
Here, let me show you...
When He finished speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai, He gave him the two tablets of the testimony, stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God.
But as nice as God was to do all that writing, we as frail humanity could never quite get it right... could never follow even those ten basic rules. Because we were born into sin since the fall of Adam in the Garden. We are in fact, imperfect and unable to stand rightly before God on our own.
But God loved us SO much that He initiated this NEW promise... a new covenant to replace the old one. And what's so amazing is that this one would not be written in stone. Rather Jesus decided to have this one personalized for each one of us. This NEW covenant, or promise, would be written on our hearts.
And He took bread, gave thanks,
broke it, gave it to them, and said, “
This is My body,
which is given for you.
Do this in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way
He also took the cup
after supper and said,
“This cup is the NEW covenant
established by My blood;
it is shed for you."
Luke 22:19-20 HCSB
Thank You, Lord,
for being the ONE who gave
so willingly of Yourself
this NEW covenant.
Who fulfilled this promise
to be written within...
because You knew that we
were unable to fulfill
the laws written in stone.
Thank You Lord,
for being our Soul Scribe
writing this within our hearts...
No longer will one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know Me, from the least to the greatest of them”... this is the Lord’s declaration. “For I will forgive their wrongdoing and never again remember their sin.”
Jeremiah 31:34 HCSB
How difficult it is for us to truly grasp the unlimited resources of our God. Yet He created all things, and through Him all things continue to be created.
He is never without.
He is unlimited.
He is infinite
He is sovereign.
And amazingly, the things of this world which we consider of greatest value, cannot compare to His glorious riches. Which is why He can give them to anyone He pleases. That is the definition of sovereignty... the authority to do with your possessions, as you wish, when you wish, how you wish.
Sometimes I wonder what life might be like if we hadn't taught our kids to count and tell time. For those are the means by which we measure our 'stuff,' constantly comparing with others, when in fact, it's God who owns it all anyway.
It makes me contemplate the worth and value of the things of this world. Just think, once we reach heaven, how many things will cause us to shake our heads and laugh, confessing, Did I really spend all that time chasing after _____________?
But then we will look upon our Lord,
Our Sovereign Supreme,
and worship Him in complete
adoration and trembling.
This is the glory and richness
for which He saved us!
I never knew I wanted to be a good fig!
But evidently, its a choice....
The Lord showed me two baskets of figs placed before the temple of the Lord. One basket contained very good figs, like early figs, but the other basket contained very bad figs, so bad they were inedible.
Jeremiah 24:2 HCSB
King Nebuchadnezzar had just taken captive the King of Judah and all his officials, leading them away to Babylon. And this is the vision which the Lord showed to the prophet Jeremiah.
This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: "Like these good figs, so I regard as good the exiles from Judah I sent away from this place to the land of the Chaldeans."
Jeremiah 24:5 HCSB
Yet those good figs, the Lord promised to keep His eyes upon, building them up, planting them, and giving them a heart to know Him.
So too, it can be with us, even today in a culture where everything is offensive, yet no one should is to offense. We can be good figs among the inedible fruit... sweet, nourishing and seed bearing. We do not need to be like the rest, nor even understand them. For Our Constant Gardner has His eyes upon us, and He will be our God when we return to Him with all our heart.
