David is now king, not just of Judah, but all Israel. And one might think with that position, comes security. But not when you have the heart of a warrior.
For the Philistines, the enemies of Israel whom David had fought so diligently in the past, have heard the news.
When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they all went in search of David, but he heard about it and went down to the stronghold.
So the Philistines came and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim.
2 Samuel 5:17-18
David could send the troops.
David could give the command.
David could stay home and be guarded...
thinking he had it all under control.
But David knew that he was not in charge.
David took up residence in the stronghold, which he named the city of David. He built it up all the way around from the supporting terraces inward. David became more and more powerful, and the Lord God of Hosts was with him.
2 Samuel 5:9-10
I can't quite imagine what it would be like to be the most powerful in the land, with valiant victories behind me and the hand of God upon me. But I bet it would be easy to let it go to your head.
But David doesn't. He inquires of the Lord, “Should I go to war against the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?” And the Lord delivers the victory.
And when God moves, it's not subtle nor small. No, if we will humble ourselves and ask Him for help... Our God shows up like a Bursting Flood.
Let us too realize His power, His presence, His longing to rescue. When we are pressured by enemies... thoughts of doubt and fear, stresses of a schedule too full, and pressures to be like the world around... let us take God as our stronghold and refuge. Let us inquire of Him what He would have us do.
Then let us stand firm to see the victory of our God... our Bursting Flood clearing the way for triumph.
All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “Here we are, your own flesh and blood. Even while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led us out to battle and brought us back. The Lord also said to you, ‘You will shepherd My people Israel and be ruler over Israel.’”
2 Samuel 5:1-2
Look how the Lord rewarded David for his faithfulness. He may not have had the support of his brothers when he slayed Goliath, but he is surrounded by warrior brothers who fulfill God's purpose by anointing him king.
When we go through the battles of life, so too will God provide those friends who can be closer than a brother... closer than a sister. He knows the support and help we need; the encouragement which may be otherwise lacking.
Let us praise God today for His mercy and grace. For He is truly our Father of this Family of God.
What a beautiful picture painted here. A Father longing to provide for His children. I wonder if Jesus recalled this in His mind as He spoke this...
Look at the birds of the sky:
They don’t sow or reap or
gather into barns,
yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Aren’t you worth more than they?
And yet we strive, just as the Israelites did long ago. People have not really changed. For though God offers to supply all our needs, He recognized the desire for their own way.
But My people did not listen to Me;
Israel did not obey Me.
So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts
to follow their own plans.
If only My people would listen to Me
and Israel would follow My ways,
I would quickly subdue their enemies
and turn My hand against their foes.
How much better if we would listen to the words of Jesus, living at peace, realizing life is about more than having our own way.
Don’t worry about your life,
what you will eat or what you will drink;
or about your body, what you will wear.
Isn’t life more than food and
the body more than clothing?
Let us stop grasping with our hands, soften our stubborn hearts and open wide our mouths. For Our God longs to be for us an Almighty Fulfilling Father.
The Lord's testimonies are His laws, His divine guidance and His promises. How comforting to know that they, in contrast to everything of this world, are completely reliable.
He's not going to change His mind, turn His back, or let us down. If we follow His word, our lives are secure in His hands. For He is the great I AM, who was, and is and is to come.
We are not to fear this word holiness. Not to be intimidated by our lack or imperfection. His holiness is enough to cover us because of the sacrifice He made on the cross. And it is beautiful... fitting His heavenly places, filling them completely for all eternity.
When uncertainty appears in it's variety of form today, rest in and lean upon Our Reliable Word.
I've heard God referred to as the Most High God many times before. But why it took me until now to realize that this was a name of His, I'll never know?
I always thought it an appropriate description.
For He reigns in the heavens as THE Most High God. the God above all gods. He is also the MOST High God because He is omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent. And He is the Most HIGH God as no one has authority over Him.
But here, as I thank Yahweh with all my heart.
as I declare all His wonderful works;
and rejoice and boast about Him,
I realize that I sing of His NAME... it is Most High.
Enjoy this worship to our Lord, Most High!
What a Beautiful Name
