As we continue reading about the priestly duties,
we come across this issue of mildew in the homes of their future...
Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron,
“When you arrive in Canaan, the land I am giving you as your own possession,
I may contaminate some of the houses in your land with mildew.
The owner of such a house must then go to the priest and say,
‘It appears that my house has some kind of mildew.’
Before the priest goes in to inspect the house,
he must have the house emptied
so nothing inside will be pronounced ceremonially unclean.
Leviticus 14:33-36 (NLT)
Here we find the people of Israel only a few years into the wilderness...
they have no idea that they will wander for 40 years before reaching Canaan, but when they arrive, the land will be filled with people who worship other gods.
People with whom God says they must not associate, not marry, not live.
For if they do, they will become like them and begin to worship those idols too.
And there will be homes left behind that the Israelites may occupy...
but they may be plagued with mildew, as curse, as a sign that the way these people lived before them is not of God. So they were to have the priest come into the home and examine it, to see if it could be cleansed... if it was habitable.
Have you ever had mold or mildew in your home...
or known of anyone who has?
Have you ever seen those commercials on TV for the lawyers...
who want to file lawsuits on your behalf for damages of mold or mildew,
and the health issues they can incur?
That is because this plague, this curse, is truly something from which it is difficult to rid our homes. Because it creeps and it grows beneath the surface of the floors, behind the plaster of the walls... where we cannot see it.
And it can have hazardous effects on our health... on our family.
Much like the sin in our lives... and the lives of the company we keep.
God is telling us to keep a vigilant watch.
God is letting us know that even when He has promised to deliver us,
even when He has brought us out of a hard place in our lives...
there will always be sin hiding somewhere.
And we need to be aware of the fact that it can be growing beneath the surface.
But we now have a greater Priest who helps examine our lives,
our hearts, our souls...
Jesus is our High Priest who has come to cleanse us
and free us from all of these plagues.
But we need to ask Him to continually re-examine us...
and we need to ask Him to give us wisdom as to where we live,
what we do, who we hang out with...
for their sin can easily creep back into our lives and affect us.
And if we are not careful,
it will happen slowly and subtly,
in the dark away from the light of Jesus,
for that is how mold grows.
But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light,
then we have fellowship with each other,
and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
1 John 1:7
Word of God... train me, today...
to remain close to the light of Jesus,
to allow His light to examine my life and expose any, and all my sin.
Lord, give me wisdom
regarding where I go and with whom I walk.
Lead me and guide me to know Your will.
For I long to not find myself in moldy places
where I fall back into sin.
But rather help me shine Your light
leading others into clean and wholesome living with You.
from my heart...
I write as an overflow... an expression of my true love for God and with a deep desire to encourage others in their day to day lives. For we can only find peace, joy, and satisfaction when we yield to the One who yielded His life for us.
