The Israelites were at war with the Philistines,
and greatly outnumbered.
But they had just been delivered by the Lord.
One battle won...
surely another, soon to come.
So in these days, kings went to war.
And King Saul desperately wanted to continue winning.
So he made a radical decision...
to declare a fast;
in order that he might conquer his enemies.
And the men of Israel were distressed that day,
for Saul had placed the people under oath, saying,
“Cursed is the man who eats any food until evening,
before I have taken vengeance on my enemies.”
So none of the people tasted food.
And Saul's troops were on the move...
pushing on to chase down the Philistine troops.
Now all the people of the land came to a forest;
and there was honey on the ground.
And when the people had come into the woods,
there was the honey, dripping;
but no one put his hand to his mouth,
for the people feared the oath.
1 Samuel 14:24
This was God's provision for these weary troops
at just the right moment.
What a beautiful sight that must have been,
standing in the woods of dripping honey.
This is a promise fulfilled by God...
Remember the days of Moses?
As he led the Israelites in the wilderness,
there was always talk of the promised land.
The land of milk and honey.
So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians,
and to bring them up from that land
to a good and large land,
to a land flowing with milk and honey...
He has brought us to this place
and has given us this land,
a land flowing with milk and honey...
The Israelite troops are standing in their promised land...
all to be their inheritance.
A good and large land that flowed...
with honey dripping from the trees,
and lying on the ground.
But they had taken an oath...
and Saul has kept them from it
for his selfish purposes.
Saul hadn't called a fast to seek the Lord,
he had spoken a curse that took from his people.
All, that is, except his son Jonathan.
But Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath;
therefore he stretched out the end of the rod
that was in his hand and dipped it in a honeycomb,
and put his hand to his mouth;
and his countenance brightened.
1 Samuel 14:27
Jonathan did not take the oath,
and therefore, did not feel confined by it.
So he partook freely of the land, as God intended.
And his countenance brightened.
That means he did more than just smile...
he was lifted and filled with energy,
he was encouraged.
And that was exactly God's intention when He made the land,
when He made the honey.
It was a promised land because it was filled with good things
to lift them up,
to give them freedom
from their past slavery,
from their enemies,
and from all they had lacked.
God had freely given... for His people to prosper.
Saul had selfishly taken away... for his vengeance.
And Jonathan received
the inheritance that God had intended.
Oh, how I need a little bit o' that honey... often!
That sweet dripping sustenance that brightens my countenance.
And while we may not find it dripping from earthy trees,
God provides it just when we need it...
as Jonathan found his strength at just the right moment.
Kind words are like honey...
sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.
When a friend sends that text... at just the right moment.
When a song lifts your spirit... at just the right moment.
When you see an encouraging post... at just the right moment.
When you run into an old friend... at just the right moment.
When a happy memory comes to mind... at just the right moment.
All good things are from God.
He knows just what we need,
at just the right moment...
Just when we need it.
So when you're feeling down, discouraged or defeated,
don't let the curses of this world keep you
from all the goodness God has to offer.
Rather, lift a prayer to God
ask Him for encouragement.
And He will send those kind words...
that honey, sweet to the soul and healthy for the body,
at just the right moment.
Word of God,
train me, today...
to be the giver of kind words this day, for someone's right moment,
to call upon You, when I am in need of my own right moment.
Lord, I thank You
for the land flowing with milk
Never have I stood in a forest
where honey drips from the trees.
But I imagine in heaven
there is such a place I will enjoy.
But until that time,
send me kind words
that I might be brightened.
And give me kind words to speak
that I might drizzle them in the middle
of someone's... just right moment.
from my heart...
I write as an overflow... an expression of my true love for God and with a deep desire to encourage others in their day to day lives. For we can only find peace, joy, and satisfaction when we yield to the One who yielded His life for us.
