Now the whole earth had one language and one speech...
And they journeyed from the east and settled in the plain...
Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks...
And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.
Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.
Genesis 11:1, 3-8
God doesn't create people without potential and purpose.
And He certainly gave us the ability to imagine greatness.
It is how we use it, that matters most to Him.
What God observed of these men of Babel was somewhat like an equation...
Unity + Purposed Effort = Unlimited Potential
the people are one + this is what they begin = nothing will be withheld
So why is God opposed to this?
All that they do is unified, together, in effort, agreement and purpose.
And none of it seems to be for evil, or for a negative outcome.
But then, again, none of it includes God.
For these are the descendants of Ham, the cursed son of Noah.
They are setting up a new city on the plains. Self-made men, filled with pride and great aspirations. Men seeking to make a name for themselves instead of for God.
And greater still, they are unified in this, agreeing on such a purpose. Almost as if they are taking God out of the equation.
And this gets God's attention.
But look how lovely this is... the way He uses a parallel language in this text.
The people say,
Come let us make bricks
Come let us build ourselves a city
Come let us make a name for ourselves
No where have they sought God. Not once do they pray and ask His help, His permission, His will, His grace, favor or wisdom.
So God uses a similar phrase replacing the plurality of Himself...
Come let Us go down there... this is the Trinity, the God of three in One.
...and confuse their language.
And then He does exactly what they fear most.
After confusing their language, He scatters them over the face of the earth.
So I wonder...
would it still be possible today, for such an extraordinary feat to be accomplished? Are we as humans still equipped with such potential?
And if so, then think of what could be done, if we followed this same equation, but added another fixed, and ever so vital constant to it.
What if we first placed God, and the glory of His Kingdom as the focus. Then we gathered in unity with purposed effort to promote it... would we reach this unlimited potential? The kind that an build a temple to the heavens?
Kingdom of God + Unity + Purposed Effort = Unlimited Potential
It is almost too much for our limited minds to conceive. Because we have not allowed ourselves the luxury of believing, of forward thinking faith.
We have lived in a world of the suppression too long that tells us it is weak to trust in a God we cannot see, and that we should grab everything we can for ourselves right here and right now. We are pressured daily to close ourselves off from unity with others as we live in the false photo world of social media.
So how can we live up to this potential when we succumb to these places that steal our potential; to this the world that fragments our faith?
Word of God... train me, today...
Lord, I can hardly believe that you created me with such potential.
I get so lost in my own doubts daily.
But I long to serve You in a great way, bringing glory to Your name...
and not to mine.
Guide me and lead me to find those who will be unified in this endeavor...
similar hearts, minds and spirits that will passionately pursue You.
Great thing we can do by faith, if we will only unite in purpose...
always including You.
from my heart...
I write as an overflow... an expression of my true love for God and with a deep desire to encourage others in their day to day lives. For we can only find peace, joy, and satisfaction when we yield to the One who yielded His life for us.
