Overview of Job
Let me begin by saying, there are certain books of the Bible that people fear reading. Or maybe a better word is... that they are intimidated by them. I know I was... I admit that Job was one of them. And Revelation, as well.
And maybe it's because of what other people have said. But if we never try, we will never know... One thing is for certain, we do have an enemy, the devil, who would love to keep us from reading the Bible, so that we do not know the truth. And he will continue to discourage us, if we let him. He will try to keep us intimidated and thinking we are unable to understand, so we won't try.
But God tells us that every book, chapter, paragraph, and verse was written under His inspiration, and is intended for our good.
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.
2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT)
So Job is a book that is no different. And before you begin, simply say a prayer, as you should with all Bible reading. And simply ask God to help you to understand. That is His desire you know... to fill you with wisdom. When you open the pages of the Bible, you are in His presence. Because He is... the Word of God!
During the reading of the book of Job, you will find that...
Job faces three tests
First... losing family.
Second... losing health.
Third... losing respect.
Job has three friends (who speak about his loss)
Eliphaz... represents personal experience
Bildad... represents universal wisdom
Zohar... represents common sense
It is easy to get overwhelmed and bogged down in fear when we read of the trials of Job... the fact, we read in chapter one, that satan is granted permission by God to interfere in Job's life. And sometimes that will scare us.
But we have a choice. We can focus on the problems... or, we can focus on the fact that God is in charge, and that satan has to be given the permission.
Let's look at what God did for Job...
Have You not made a hedge around him,
around his household,
and around all that he has on every side?
You have blessed the work of his hands,
and his possessions have increased in the land.
Job 1:10 (NKJV)
Do not forget about the blessings of God... and that Job was protected and blessed because he feared God and shunned evil... he was blameless and upright. Are we seeking a life like this now? Are we praying for God to put a hedge of protection around us, and all our household... on every side?
If not... we should.
God can protect us.
God can bless us.
Let us seek to be people like Job, whom God looks upon as blameless and upright. I wonder if He has bragging rights about us in heaven... are we giving Him something to brag about?
Word of God... train me, today...
to be blameless and upright before God.
to not fear, but rather to trust God...
for His hedge of protection over my life and around my family;
for His blessings over the work of my hands
and the increase of my possessions.
And I pray, Lord, that I will be ever thankful
for all that You provide.
Give me wisdom,
and strengthen me by Your hand
to be blameless and upright.
from my heart...
I write as an overflow... an expression of my true love for God and with a deep desire to encourage others in their day to day lives. For we can only find peace, joy, and satisfaction when we yield to the One who yielded His life for us.
